E85 is a high-ethanol fuel blend containing 85% denatured ethanol and 15% petrol. It has an exceptionally high octane rating (RON ~108), significantly lower CO₂ lifecycle emissions, and is produced domestically from sugarcane, grains, or agricultural waste — making it a truly renewable and indigenous energy source for India.

No — only Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) specifically certified to run on E85 can safely use this blend. Standard petrol vehicles are designed for E5–E10 at most; using E85 in a non-FFV can damage fuel system components including seals, pumps, and injectors. E85 is typically priced 30–40% lower per litre than petrol. However, ethanol has a lower energy density (~34% less than petrol), so FFVs experience 15–25% lower fuel efficiency. The net running cost savings are around 15–20% per kilometre, making E85 economically attractive for high-mileage users.

E85 stations are currently operational across select IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL outlets, primarily in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Karnataka. In a properly tuned FFV, E85 can actually improve performance due to its higher octane rating and better heat of vaporisation, which cools the intake charge and allows for more aggressive ignition timing. Manufacturers like Toyota have demonstrated 5–8% peak power increases in E85-optimised engines compared to petrol.

India's National Biofuel Policy targets 20% ethanol blending in petrol (E20) nationally by 2025, with the long-term vision of supporting higher blends including E85 for FFV adoption.
